Koken Art Factory, 2500 Ohio Street, Saint Louis, MO 63104
At the very mention of the name, Art Attack!, Sotheby’s cowers in fear. This year’s event, Art Attack!: Day of the Dead Art, takes auction bidding wars to new levels of fun and destruction, with proceeds from the chaos benefiting both KDHX Community Media and South City Open Studio and Gallery.
Art Attack!: Day of the Dead Art takes place on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Koken Art Factory (2500 Ohio Street, Saint Louis, MO 63104). Doors open at 7:00 pm, and the event will begin at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Art Attack! is a competitive art destructo-auction, featuring works by 32 local artists, styled as a single-elimination tournament, with the overall winner taking home $1,000. Losing paintings face the possibility of destruction.
Here’s how it plays out: Randomly selected pairs of paintings will compete head-to-head. Audience response to each painting will be measured by an Applause-O-Meter, with the piece receiving the most applause proceeding to the next round. Losing works of art will then face a perilous future in front of the Wheel of Misfortune. This large wheel includes several imaginative ways of destroying the losing piece. If the Wheel lands on “Certain Death,” the piece will be destroyed immediately. If not, the audience will have a chance to save it by bidding on it in an auction. If the minimum bid determined for the round is not reached, the piece will be destroyed accordingly. Last year’s methods of destruction included a chainsaw, a baseball bat-wielding hillbilly, a samurai armed with a sword and even an Edward Scissorhands.
Art Attack!: Day of the Dead Art spans five nerve-rattling rounds until the final winner is announced. Participating artists understand that there is a possibility of their artwork being destroyed. However, this is a fun, high-energy atmosphere that provides great exposure regardless of the outcome of the competition — and money raised from the auction benefit two fine art organizations in Saint Louis: KDHX Community Media and SCOSAG.

Poetry Scores Art Invitational
Friday, November 21, 2008
Hoffman LaChance Contemporary, 3100 Sutton Blvd, Maplewood, MO
The poem “Nailed Seraphim” by K. Curtis Lyle is the subject of the 2008 Poetry Scores Art Invitational.A copy of “Nailed Seraphim” is available on the poet’s blog. Each artist will make a new piece of art that responds to “Nailed Seraphim” and is named after a verbatim scrap of language from the poem. The work will be displayed and positioned around the space, according to where in the poem the language chosen for the title of the artwork appears. This makes for a fascinating and perhaps unique curatorial experience, in that the poem itself basically hangs the show (or tells Robert Goetz how and where to hang it). The work will be sold on silent auction, with the artist setting the opening bid. Any money brought in from a sale will be split evenly between artist, venue, and Poetry Scores.
Poetry Scores is a St. Louis-based arts organization that translates poetry into other media, including music, visual art, film, beer, food and experiences.

Art Attack
November 16th, 7PM - Midnight
South Broadway Athletic Club, 2301 South 7th Street, St. Louis, Missouri

Press Release:
KDHX Community Media and South City Open Studio and Gallery for Children (SCOSAG) present Art Attack! on Friday, November 16 at the South Broadway Athletic Club from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Art Attack! is Saint Louis’ first and only rock ‘n’ roll art destructo-auction. Outrageous and chaotic, this competitive art event will benefit both KDHX Community Media and SCOSAG. The event features original works from 32 local artists, including local celebrities. Completed works may be viewed at the KDHX TV studio during regular business hours from November 1 until the day of the event. Works may also be viewed online.
Art Attack! is a single elimination tournament consisting of five rounds in which pairs of paintings will compete head-to-head. Audience response to each painting will be measured by an Applause-O-Meter, with the piece receiving the most applause progressing to the next round.
Losing works of art then face a perilous future in front of the Wheel of Misfortune. This large wheel includes six diabolical and imaginative ways of destroying the losing piece. If the Wheel lands on “Certain Death,” it will be destroyed immediately. If not, the audience will then have a chance to save the piece by bidding on it for a minimum of $50 in the first round, $75 in the second, and so on. If the minimum is not reached, the piece will meet its demise without delay.
The excitement will continue throughout five nerve-rattling rounds until the final winner is announced. The creator of the winning piece will win $1,000 cash, as well as the comfort of knowing that their art will live on.
Art Attack! will also feature the gritty blues of Casey Reid and bluegrass-punk of The Monads in between rounds.
Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door at 7:00 p.m. or for advance purchase at the South Broadway Athletic Club.
The South Broadway Athletic Club is located at 2301 South 7th Street in St. Louis, Missouri.
