Happened in July
Things happened in July. I didn’t blog about them. So here we go. The photo above is from Maplewood’s Bastille Day celebration “Let Them Eat Art.” Despite a downpour early in the evening, it was really fun with a good turnout. Each artist was assigned a local business, and Chris and Greg from the Well Body Clinic were awesome! Visit them for chiropractic and acupuncture.
I was told by some of the other artists that we were supposed to be creating an entire work during the time period of the event a la Wall Ball, but I missed that impression if it was given. Frankly, I was tired on a Friday night, the space was too clean to sling paint around and spray fixative, and I wanted to chat with people over a glass of wine, so no major work happened. I asked the kids who came by to help me with one of my paintings, which sort of freaked out the adults. What can I say? I like shocking people. No, seriously, kids are always very careful when helping me. I just ask them to think about certain things, and then decide what they’d like to do on the painting. Like I said, they’re very careful. And we were just using pastels, not the end of the world at all.

I helped Dave a tiny bit with his fab kitchen set for the Tin Ceiling’s production of Sam Shepard’s play True West. This mainly involved one of my little known fortes: drapery via staple gun. The set got a nice mention by KDHX reviewer Sarah Boslaugh. Here’s a photo:

I was on the Contemporary Art Museum’s City Wide Open Studio tour for the first time. It was a lovely, chill day chatting with visitors and friends. Turn out was a little light… maybe 50 people? 60? but quite nice. (The bike tour went right past my door, but didn’t stop?) That day, I also concocted the best ever summer cocktail, inspired by the juice served with Mokabe’s brunch buffet.
Summer Cocktail Recipe
- 1/2 can frozen orange juice concentrate
- 1/2 can frozen lemonaid
- 1/2 can pureed fresh strawberries
Combine the above in a pitcher, fill with water and ice, mix well. Refrigerate. To serve, pour over ice and add Vodka to taste.

I learned to knit. I’m a little obsessed. Photos forthcoming.

Stella Mora (Dave’s band) was featured in St. Louis Magazine! It’s a fantastic article which talks about the history of the band, shoegaze in the Midwest, their upcoming release, etc. You can read “Stellar Feedback” here.

Baconpalooza, the demise of Jason’s bachelorhood, was celebrated. Although I am happy to have now successfully expelled the lingering aromas of bacon grease and cigarette smoke from my abode, the two days of movies, video game, PBR, and pork products were worth it.

A freelance photographer visited us to shoot pictures for an upcoming issue of ReadyMade magazine. (He’s since returned and regaled us with amazing feats of camera balancing to obtain that ever elusive angle shot, but that belongs in August…)
