Apartment Therapy

I have to admit that having a budding interior designer- not to mention someone handy with tools- around has been excellent. I haven’t posted about it yet, but Dave has been hard at work designing and constructing a built-in platform bed for me. Although it’s a work in progress, when he posted some shots on flickr, one of my favorite design websites, Apartment Therapy, asked to feature it!

See Apartment Therapy’s post here.

Unfortunately, the comments on the AP site don’t seem to be working this morning, but here’s my response to thoughtful comments and suggestions from AP readers:

Thanks so much for all the comments and suggestions! Even though it’s in progress, I am loving my bed so far. It actually is sort of like sleeping on a floor/platform bed hybrid… like one giant step. Totally not for everyone, but comfy for me personally. I really like having the extra platform space because it creates a spot that’s elevated from the true floor for hanging out, yoga, etc.

Dave- who is designing and building- actually has discussed the slats issue, and we’re still deciding about that and additional access to the storage underneath. (bepsf- I agree! I’m storing 2 trunks of family heirlooms underneath right now.)

trygve- I love the particle board look also, so we’re just going to seal it with a clear finish. I’m still working out the details of living amidst my art studio, so battle with dust and fumes wages on… I could see sliding glass doors on the bottom section to protect books. And I think the idea could definitely be adapted to modular, built or with IKEA hacks.
